This article explains how Justice Stevens will soon decide to step down as one of the United States Supreme Court justices. According to our textbook, we have learned that the Supreme Court is …’the highest level of the three-tiered model of the federal court system.’ This court is made up of nine justices, Stevens being one of them. The current President of the United States nominates new justices and then they are appointed with the advice and consent of the Senate. Once appointed, a justice has a life tenure which can only be interrupted by death, retirement, resignation or impeachment. President Obama recently nominated and appointed Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice.
