The Gambler Who Blew $127 Million

I know what you're thinking, how is that even possible ?? That was my intial thought while going over this article. I couldn't imagine losing $127 million over the span of my lifetime, but not only did this person lose that massive amount of money, but blew it in only a year! It was said to be a year long gambling binge. He has now filed a civil lawsuit against the casino where he lost the money, Harrah's. His claim is that the casino staff kept him with a constant supply of liquor and pain medication. Personally, I think the lawsuit is completely ridiculous and unrealistic. How many people gamble everyday, and many have addictions, as he most likely does, and you don't see all of those people filing a lawsuit against the casino where they lost their money. Every person who enters a casino is fully aware of the actual chance of them winning any substantial amount of money. Most of us do it for entertainment purposes, however many who are addicted go in thinking they will win back what they lost the last time they gambled, but this is a personal choice someone makes of their own capacity. This being said, there is no way the casino can be held liable for this mans actions in being frivilous with his fortune.

  1. I'm not sure I agree with you on all points. If the man was being served alcohol and pain medication continuously, then the level of his lucidity would have to be taken into consideration. Certainly he is not dismissed from the gambling contracts he formed while intoxicated simply because he was intoxicated, but it should be taken into consideration before making a decision, how intoxicated he was. It could very well be the case that the casino was taking advantage of the man while he was in a non-lucid state.

  2. I don't think that the casino is liable at all for this man's actions. They may have served him alcohol and pain medication, but is he unable to say no? There are a lot of people out there with addictions, and they are too quick to place the blame somewhere else. He needs to take responsibility for gambling away all of his money.

  3. I think the casino should be scrutinized very closely for supplying this man with pain medication. I don't know anything about casinos, but where are they getting the authority to pass out pain meds? The casino can only benefit by keeping this man inebriated. It would be one thing if the man was getting intoxicated on his own from a different source. But with the casino supplying the drugs and alcohol, they intentionally put themselves in a position to take advantage of someone who is not thinking clearly.

  4. I understand the liquor, they give liquor to everyone, but I would need to see some hard evidence to prove that the casino was supplying someone with prescription pain medicine. The risk does not outweigh the reward, it would not be worth it. If it was proven that the were suppling the meds illegally, reluctantly I would back him. Other than that, he's got a problem and should have sought help before he lost his fortune.
