I've never been a Wal-Mart supporter and this is just one of the many reasons, they never learn. They have been fined millions upon millions of dollars for repeatedly violating labor laws throughout the country and it doesn't look like will stop any time soon.

It is quite ridiculous i actually wrote a paper last semester on ethics and i chose walmart as my company and the information i found was horrible. My Fiance is a manager at Walmart and I've heard so many aweful things from him about them as well yet sadly they are very in expensive and people will continue to keep them thriving so the company in my opinion is on a high horse and seems to not care for regulations or its employees.
ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous that a business like that, doesn't care about the employee's regulation and welfare, and Walmart prefers to pay money for fines instead to respect the people's rights. Normally, I shop in Walmart for basics; however, the faces from many employees seem to me that they are unhappy with the policies from the company.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this is a nation wide problem with walmart. Is this in all of the wal-mart stores, majority, or just some? I'm agreeing with Donna when she said that wal-mart is on a high horse because of the prices and no matter what rules they break, it's hard for shoppers not to be behind them because we need them in a sence. It's not right what they are doing but it isn't the end of the world either.
ReplyDeleteI find this absurd and cannot believe that a company so financially stable can treat the most second most important source of their millions of dollars each year. What Wal-Mart does not understand is that the employees draw the costumers back to the store. The advertising catches the people’s attentions, but the employee’s friendliness, awareness, caring, and energy draws them back that second, third, and even fourth time. I work in retail myself and I definitely realized that happy employees make happy costumers.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct Michelle, the employees make the difference. I work in retail also and the associates tat work in the store make or break your visit and it the responsibility on management to create a positive work environment so associates will create a positive shopping environment for the customers. Unhappy customers shop someplace else.
ReplyDeleteThis really is a nationwide problem Nadera711. A lot of companies violate the labor laws. When I was 16 I startd working at a Giant Grocery Store and they constantly commited violations to the labor laws. Employees that were 15 years old could only work until a certain time on school nights, had to take an hour lunch break after working so many hours, and were required to take 2 15 minute breaks if they worked 8 hour shifts. These rules amoung many other were never followed. I just think it is so sad that businesses drop down to this level. My opinion is, during these hard economic times people are struggling for jobs. If companies are in positions where they are violating labor laws, why don't they hire more employees to prevent making these violations? I know the answer to that is because they don't want to put out the money to pay more employees. Obviously more serious action needs to be taken against Wal-Mart, because fining them does not seem to be doing any good at all.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a fine line these chain stores walk where they are trying to make a profit without giving away too much to the employees. I know another person also posted something different about Starbucks but Starbucks is actually one company that treats their employees really well. Even part time employees have access to health insurance so it's a great job for someone who needs just enough to get by along with health coverage.
ReplyDeleteWalmart has been scraping the bottom of the ethics pool and it works for them. We keep shopping there, people keep working there and wholesalers keep doing business with them despite their strong-arm tactics to get the lowest prices. As long as it works, they'll keep doing it.
Micki I agree with you. This is not the first or the last time Walmart will violate labor laws. Its basically a cost-benfit analysis for them. The cost of paying the ensuing fine versus the cost of having the employees take a longer break or work shorter hours, etc. The economic crisis is only aiding in this fiasco, as adequate jobs become scarce, and people become willing to take further abuse in order to provide for their families.
